[QUOTE=jtkirby] Very nice! I especially like the neck lamination accent that repeats on the back - I've been wanting to try that out myself.

I've been told that's the racing stripe.

Nicely executed guitar, as Russell said nice finish could almost be British (that's a compliment by the way )
I know several guys over here that use the Mohawk finish to a sheen.

Tell me, having never built a cutaway, do you need a license for that thing!

Great, neat workmanship, no higher compliment.

Colin

Colin, I think they issue a "00" ranking for a cutaway like this.

Although, what do the issue if it's a 000 size guitar

The finish is mohawk classic instrument lacquer over bulls eye premixed shellac.

Here is the schedule.

prep as typical, sand to 320 and fill voids/gaps.
spray 3 coats a day, 1 hr between. 3 days, to total 9 coats. Let cure 1 week.

Level with 400 3M gold free-cut paper (easier to see where things are at with the dry sand, Thanks Mario)

When level, spray another 6 coats same as before. Let cure as long as humanly possible, I left it 3 weeks.

Sand again 400,600,800 (all dry), wet sand 1000,1200.

Than I used 0000 steel wool with paste wax (the can is in the shop, got it at Home Depot) and rubbed the finished with it, than buffed with a soft cloth as fast as possible to remove the wax and well buff.

That's about it, I'm very happy with the finish and I would love to make this my standard sheen, it's more than matte, closer to semi-gloss.

Thanks again for all the praise. I'm looking forward to presenting it to my friend tonight.

Beautiful work Rod. I too am very impressed nby the cutaway. The overall design is superb. I especially like how the stripes created by the laminated neck are continued through the backstrip. Bravo!

Yeah, what Joe said about the stripes. I'm fairly certain that if I had tried that, those stripes wouldn't have lined up.

Hey, let us know what your friend thinks.

Steve, I've teased him with a link to this thread. He has seen it along the way, but nothing like this. He is very excited about tonight. He told me earlier this morning that he had a hard time sleeping he was so excited. Christmas times a comin' !

Delivery of a new instrument has got to be one of the best and worst experiences for us as builders. We know all the minor (and major if there are any) flaws in the build and yet there is this anticipation that the customer will be pleased.

I have always told the three customers that I have that they are not getting something which is purfect, or even close for that matter, I always point out the defects or "oops" locations and tell them my take on the build. Building for friends with low expectation has been good to start out with. I'm sure like most of you, I'm much harder on my self than my customers have been.

Ya, I like the racing stripes, the next one will have it also as the customer realy likes #3 guitar (which has the racing stripes) Vrooooom, giddy up.

Hello all!

Well, Rod mentioned that he sent his friend a link to this forum. Well, I'm that friend.

To be honest, I can't wait until I get my hands on that instrument!

Thanks for all the encouragement for Rod. It really is his #4. I've seen the others and how Rod's skill has increased over the past couple years. He takes pride in his work, as I'm sure all you do as well.

I'm trying not to get impatient, but the taunting must end soon! I heard the guitar over cel phone, after Rod strung it up.

(I can't wait, I can't wait, I CAN'T WAIT!!!)

Cheers all!
Rod's coming over for dinner this evening with his family...

Great work! I don't normally like pointy cutaways, but yours is very nice and perfect for the guitar. Well done.

Really nice guitar, Rod. Can I borrow it? I'll give it back, really I will.

Well Rod...

...absolutely amazing! I played the guitar (of course you know that because you were THERE) and was in awe of the tone, the feel, and the beauty of the guitar itself.
WOW
And I look forward to playing it this evening.

Thanks for the guitar!!!
